City of Inverness again honored as a "Tree City USA"

Inverness, FL -- The City of Inverness has been named a Tree City USA for the 16th consecutive year.

In order to receive this recognition, the City of Inverness must meet four standards: having a tree board/department, having a tree care ordinance, having an annual budget of at least $2 per capita spent through it's community forestry program, and have an Arbor Day observance with a proclamation.

The city was presented with an honorary Tree City USA flag, hat, pin and other items.

There are 3,400 communities credited as Tree City's throughout the U.S.

Public Safety Task Force considers consolidating police, fire, and EMS services

Citrus County, Florida -- The county's new Public Safety Task Force, which was assembled to examine a possible consolidation of law enforcement, fires services, and emergency medical service under one Public Safety Department for the county, met last week on Friday, Feb. 4, as described on Citrus County's Official Government Website.

The Task Force was given in-depth descriptions of each service from the Citrus County Sheriff's Office, the Board of County Commission's Fire Rescue Department, and Nature Coast EMS ambulance service.

The group will continue to meet and consider the idea of consolidation and whether it would be advantageous for Citrus County. The task force is expected to deliver a recommendation to the county commission by early spring.

This month's feature for Citrus County's Movies in the Park is "The Tale of Despereaux", Rated G, and will be shown at Bicentennial Park, 501 N. Baseball Point in Crystal River.

Games and activities start at 5 p.m. and the movie starts at 6 p.m.

Inverness, FL -- Life South is reaching out to connect donors with patients who are in need of blood...and you can help!

By donating a pint of blood, you can feel good about helping others and receive a free recognition item and cholesterol screening.

All blood types are needed. 16-year-old donors may only donate with written parental consent; otherwise, donors must be 17 or older and weigh at least 110 lbs.

All donors, regardless of age, need to bring a photo ID in order to donate blood.

The Bloodmobile will be in the Inverness Government Center parking lot on Thursday, Feb. 10, from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Celtic group "Cherish the Ladies" comes to Lecanto

Lecanto, Florida -- Celtic group "Cherish the Ladies" is celebrating twenty-five years of folk music making, and their next stop will be playing at The Curtis Peterson Auditorium of Lecanto High School in Lecanto tomorrow night.

According to the group's official website, their critical acclaim has included rave reviews from the New York Times ("expands the annals of Irish music in America, the music is passionate, tender and rambunctious") and The Boston Globe ("It is simply impossible to imagine an audience that wouldn't enjoy what they do").

You can check out the award-winning, internationally-travelled Irish band for yourself, when the show kicks off tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m.

County hosts "Love Your Library" formal affair

Citrus County, Florida -- A formal affair featuring wine-tasting, live music, a silent auction and refreshments is heading your way - and it will benefit libraries across Citrus County!

The Citrus County Library Foundation will present the 1st Annual Love Your Library Evening, February 18, 2011. This event will include a variety of activities, and all proceeds will go be shared across the Citrus County Library System branches.

The event is scheduled from 6:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at Central Ridge Library, 425 W. Roosevelt Blvd., Beverly Hills, FL, 34465. The cost is $15 per person. Tickets will be offered at all local libraries, or can be purchased by calling 352-746-9077.

Landfill to host Eagle Watch

Landfill to host Eagle Watch

Crystal River, FL -- The Citrus County Central Landfill will host an Eagle Watch on Saturday, Feb. 19, from 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m., which is open to the public, including those of all bird-watching skills.

Before the tour, birders will hear a short presentation about bald eagles by Darrell Snedecor, President of Citrus County Audubon Society.

The birding trail is hard packed dirt and vehicles must be used. Car-pooling will be encouraged. Bring binoculars or scopes. There will be several stops at vantage points where eagles, vultures, gulls, and other birds may be observed. Participants will also be able to observe the landfill disposal area.
