Citrus County Sheriff's Office seeks crib donations in Safe Sleep Campaign

Citrus County, Florida-- The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office is teaming up with the Department of Children and Families for a Safe Sleep campaign.

According to the DCF, 10 of 95 infant deaths this year happened in Citrus County, and are believed to be  the result of unsafe sleeping environments. As the DCF investigates these local deaths and others statewide, the Citrus County Sheriff's Office asks for the public's help in preventing further tragedy. 

Homeowners association no longer ducking the duck controversy?

Homosassa, Florida -- When members of the homeowners association at The Meadows subdivision in Homosassa decided to hire a trapper to remove more than 50 Muscovy ducks that live on the property, they probably never knew the firestorm they were creating. 

Two residents who live in the community started asking questions and they, along with a few others, spent hours researching what really happens to the ducks once they're trapped.

Citrus County, Florida-- Citrus County’s tourist tax collections for FY 12-13 are on track to surpass last year’s collections and could be the highest seen in the last four years, the Board of County Commissioners announced Tuesday.

According to the Citrus County Visitors and Convention Bureau, the Tourist Development Tax, which is a 3 percent tax on all transient accommodations in Citrus County, has collected over $575,000 as of August 2013 – the most recent month available. That is nearly 13 percent higher than August 2012 collections.

Inverness, Florida-- The Cooter Festival Returns in 2013 with events on October 25th, October 26th and October 27th Friday. 

Sunny Cooter's Friday Night Cooter Festival Kickoff Block Party starts at 6:00pm and runs until 10:00pm. It's taking place in Inverness at the Courthouse Square. There will be live music, the Miss Cooter championship and other entertainment.

Citrus County, Florida-- Pepper Creek Trail is transformed for a spooky tram ride this weekend! A Haunted House, costume contests, face painters and games are included too.  

Suggested donations are $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for children 12 and under, $2.00 for the Haunted House.

This fund-raising event is sponsored by the Friends of Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park.

Crystal River, Florida-- Crystal River Preserve State Park will spook for two evenings of terrifying trams rides, scary boat trips, haunted house and other ghoulish activities!

Join the Friends of Crystal River State Parks as they host the annual Haunted Halloween for two days, Friday October 25th and Saturday, October 26th. Tickets will go on sale the day of, at 7:00pm with the last tickets sold at 10:00pm.

Hillsborough school to be honored for green initiatives

Tallahassee, Florida -- A Hillsborough County school will be honored as a finalist for excelling in green school initiatives at the 5th Annual Florida Green School Awards Ceremony and Banquet in Orlando on Oct. 29.

Lawton Chiles Elementary was named one of three finalists in the state for its contributions in saving and conserving energy and water and reducing waste. The other two schools it's up against are Audubon Elementary in Duval County and Eagles Landing Outdoor Learning Center in Palm Beach County.
