Community redevelopment funds sent to Crystal River, Inverness

Community redevelopment funds sent to Crystal River, Inverness

Crystal River, Florida -- According to a report issued by the county, the Citrus County Board of County Commissioners is sending out the annual Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) payments to the cities of Crystal River and Inverness.

The county sends checks to both cities in the county each year for their CRAs. The state allows the cities to create CRA zones for a 30-year term and use the taxes from the annual increases in taxable property valuation in that zone -- calculated from the base year -- for redevelopment purposes in that area.

The $272,228 check that goes to the Crystal River (CRA) Trust Fund this year represents the annual payment of taxes from increased property values in the CRA zone from the base year, 1988. Since the CRA was created, the county has sent about $2.5 million to the city, which also contributes to its CRA, though less than the county because of the tax rate differential.

With the city's portion, the funding total so far is around $4 million.

County's Evironmental Health department moves to new building

County's Evironmental Health department moves to new building

Lecanto, FL - In order to increase efficiency of resources and space, the Citrus County Environmental Health department has moved into the Lecanto Government Building, according to the Citrus County Board of County Commissioners.

The announcement goes on to explain the logic behind the move:

The Environmental Health Office, a branch of the state Health Department, was up and running in its new home as of Monday, Jan. 3. The new location, in the county commission’s administrative staff office building, is a good one, as Environmental Health is now literally across the hall from the county building department (click here for the website).

Citrus county unemployment rates on the rise

Citrus county unemployment rates on the rise

Crystal River, FL - According to the Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation, unemployment numbers are on the rise again in Citrus county. The somewhat sudden increase to 13.8%, up 0.8% since last month, however, is far from final.

The rates, released last Friday by the agency, show economic instability in the market, and could just as easily decline again next month.

The unemployed population topped 14 percent in the three-county region of Citrus, Levy and Marion counties this November, according to Workforce Connection data, with the Ocala region claiming the second-highest unemployment rate in the state of Florida.
