4th Annual 9/11 Memorial Fitness Challenge set for September

Citrus County, Florida-- The Citrus Heart and Vascular Center, Local 4562 Professional Firefighters of Citrus County, and the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office are preparing for the 4th Annual 9/11 Memorial Fitness Challenge on Sunday, September 8, 2013.

This event is held each year to honor the 343 firefighters, 60 law enforcement officers, 8 emergency medical technicians and 125 military personnel who lost their lives in the World Trade Center Towers and Pentagon on September 11, 2001. Participants will be faced with the task of climbing 110 flights of stairs to symbolize the floors in the World Trade Center Towers, while climbing in full bunker gear and air packs carrying a picture tag of one of the 343 fallen firefighters with them.

Members of the community are encouraged to participate and support participants in the fitness challenge. Registration begins at 7:00 am and the event starts at 8:15 with a group photo, dedication and prayer, followed by a moment of silence.

Families can enjoy refreshments, fire apparatus displays, health information and a newly-added Kids Junior Firefighter Fitness Challenge, where children will have the opportunity to compete in an obstacle course and complete their own combat challenge.

Those interested in participating can pre-register online for $35. The registration fee includes a donation to the National Fallen Firefighter Foundation, commemorative t-shirt, wristband and sticker.

Day-of registration will be $45.

Patches will be awarded to those who complete the 110 story climb in full gear and air-pack.
