Why do they call it that? Inverness LIVE on the road!

This Citrus County town agreed to drop its original name and pick up a new Scottish one, in return for something special.

Check out the videos on the right for all of the action during our LIVE road show in Downtown Inverness!

Thanks to everyone in Inverness who came out to share in the fun with the crew from 10 News!

Why do they call it Inverness?

Ask "Uncle Alf."

Civil War veteran Alfred Tompkins bought a bunch of land here. He gave some to his brother-in-law -- free.

So when that brother-in-law laid out the plan for a city on this spot, he named it Tompkinsville. It was quite the thank-you gift.

But it wouldn't last. Local legend says a lonely Scotsman moved to town. He wanted a new name based on a city in the Scottish highlands.
