Citrus County, Florida-- Housing Services will accept energy assistance applications on a walk-in basis for one day only.  Ordinarily applications for LIHEAP are accepted by appointment only due to the demand for assistance.  

On Thursday, Feb. 21, from 2 p.m. - 8 p.m. low-income Citrus County residents may visit the Citrus County Resource Center to apply for this assistance. All applicants must be checked in by 7 p.m. to be considered. Future appointments may be made for those who are not served.

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps low-income families with home heating and cooling costs.The program was designed to assist families in need with a portion of their primary heating costs, but does not routinely cover a household's total energy cost. 

LIHEAP provides two types of assistance, crisis and regular:

Crisis Assistance Criteria:

  • Households may apply for Crisis Assistance once a year and can receive up to $600
  • To do so, the family must be delinquent in paying their utility bill
  • have received a shut-off notice
  • be without power
  • or require a deposit 
  • If the household has received this assistance in the past year, they are not eligible for crisis. 

Regular Assistance Criteria:

  • Once a year for a current bill
  • The benefit range is $150- $300 per household depending on family size and income.
  • If the household has received this assistance in the past year, they are not eligible for regular assistance

Applicants must bring the following items that apply to the household in order to be served:

  • Photo identification
  • Most recent power bill (current, past due or shut-off notice)
  • EBT/SNAP card for applicant
  • Social Security Number card or official documentation for EVERY member of the household
  • Proof of all household members' gross income for at least the past month
  • ‚ÄčIncome documentation may include pay stubs, 2013 Social Security benefits letter, child support award letter, unemployment award letter, TANF award letter, or other income sources.  Bank statements are not acceptable as proof of income.

The event will be held at Housing Services in the Citrus County Resource Center, 2804 W Marc Knighton Ct. Lecanto, FL 34461.
