Learn all about Florida Cowboys and their important part in our state's history, daily life and thier economic impact on our state at a free book signing and program presented by Carlton Ward, Jr. on Thursday, Oct. 6.

Ward is an environmental photojournalist from Clearwater with graduate training in ecology and anthropology. He promotes conservation of natural environments and cultural legacies through the eye of his camera.

Citrus County, FL -- Join the Florida Public Relations Association at the 4th Annual Roast n' Toast on Sept. 9.

This year's guest of honor will be former Commissioner Gary Bartell. Roastmaster Gerry Mulligan, Citrus County Chronicle publisher, will moderate a team of Bartell's closest friends through slapstick humor and heartfelt tales.

Featured on the panel will be Gail Oakes, Clark Stillwell, Gary Kuhl, Sonny Vegara and Curt Ebitz. Rumor has it that a surprise roaster will make a special appearance.

Citrus County car dealership owner killed when boat overturns

Citrus County, FL -- As investigators searched for answers on Monday, friends remembered a Citrus County businessman who they say leaves behind a huge hole in the community. 

Robert Phillips, the owner of the Eagle Buick GMC dealership in Homosassa, was killed Sunday, after his boat flipped on the Homosassa River.

Nine passengers, including his wife and two teenage children, were treated at local hospitals on Sunday, but are all expected to survive.

"We have many great citizens, but Rob was right there in the top 10 of people that this community relied on," said Josh Wooten of the Citrus County Sheriff's Office.

Man buys winning scratch-off ticket in Hernando

Citrus County, FL -- An Ocala man's life changed in a big way when he recently won the $500,000 top prize in the GOLD RUSH Scratch -Off game.

Mark Fiorita, 47, bought the winning ticket at the Kangaroo Express, located at 8486 N. Carl G. Rose Highway in Hernando. Fiorita claimed his prize today at the Florida Lottery headquarters in Tallahassee.

The odds of winning the $20 game are one in 2.95.

The fire broke out Monday morning around 5:45 a.m. destroying the restaurant on West Halls River Road in Homosassa. According to the Homosassa Fire and Rescue, when they arrived on the scene there were flames coming through the roof and it was "fully-involved".

Woman killed in ATV accident

Crystal River, FL -- A 20-year-old Inverness woman was killed in an ATV accident in Crystal River Friday afternoon.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, around 4 p.m., 22-year-old Eric Lee Stokes, of Crystal River, was riding an ATV east in a fenced-in field behind the residence of 8325 Orangetree Street when he lost control of the ATV and the vehicle rotated counter clockwise and overturned onto its right side against a fence.

Stokes and his passenger, Terri Lynn Benoit, were both ejected off of the ATV. Benoit died at the scene of the crash as a result of her injuries. Stokes received minor injuries. Neither Benoit or Stokes were wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
