Mom gives birth in front yard, while husband packs for hospital

Inverness, Florida-Whitney and Blaine Wright knew a baby was on the way, but they had no idea how fast.  Around 3:30 Saturday morning, Wright gave birth in her front yard, while trying to make it to the family car and onto the hospital.

"I started screaming for my husband and I said she's coming and she's coming right now," said Whitney Wright, 24, who spent hours in labor on her first pregnancy.

"I made it out my front door and collapsed and I wasn't going anywhere else. I felt her coming out," said Wright.

Whitney's husband was inside gathering their bags and two year old daughter to take to the hospital and did not realize his wife was already giving birth out in the front yard.

Whitney managed to grab her cell phone and call 9-1-1 for help. The dispatcher calmly directed Whitney on what to do while sending emergency crews to the home.

Lecanto, Florida -- A pregnant woman in Citrus County went into labor yesterday morning and didn't have time to make it to the hospital. She called 911. On the other end of the line?  A dispatcher who helped her deliver the baby over the phone.

Eric Maltz is an 18-year-old communications dispatcher who works with the Citrus County Sheriff's Office.

"My main goal is going into law enforcement and becoming a deputy, but this job being a 911 dispatcher and a call taker gives really good insight," Maltz said.

Eric has been working in the 911 call center for the past six months, and while he's taken a lot of unusual calls, early Saturday morning, he took a call from a woman in labor.
