Citrus County BOCC elects new chairman

Citrus County, FL -- At its Nov. 15 regular meeting, the Citrus County Board of County Commissioners elected Commissioner Winn Webb to serve as the chairman of the commission for the next year.

Commissioner Joe Meek was elected 1st Vice Chairman, and Commissioner John J.J. Kenney was elected as 2nd Vice Chairman.

Each November the commission elects a new Chairman, 1st Vice-Chairman and 2nd Vice Chairman in a reorganization meeting. Webb has represented District 5 since 2008. Dennis Damato was the outgoing chairman.

James Henningsen will become the next president of the College of Central Florida in Ocala, beginning in January.

Henningsen is currently the vice president for academic affairs/ chief academic officer at Seminole State College of Florida.

Former College of Central Florida president Charles Dassance retired in May.

Man arrested in SWAT call-out

Citrus County, FL -- A SWAT team was called out to a Crystal River home Tuesday afternoon after a man who allegedly robbed and attacked a woman fled from police.

According to detectives, 35-year-old Olivia Mason said Scott Buckner offered her a ride while she was walking down Hwy 40 in Ocala after leaving a Dollar General Store.  Mason said she accepted the ride because she knew Buckner through a mutual friend. Mason said Buckner told her he needed to make a couple of stops before he dropped her off.

Minor arrested in teen's murder to be charged as adult

Citrus Springs, FL -- Citrus County Sheriff's Office announced today that 16-year-old Deandre Phillips will be charged as an adult for the death of 18-year-old Fredrick Drew.

Phillips, a student of the Renaissance Center, was arrested on Oct. 2 for shooting and killing the Citrus High student after a fight broke out while at a gathering near Citrus Springs Blvd. and E. Noah Lane.

Police: Sibling deaths appear accidental

Homossasa, FL -- According to preliminary reports from the Leesburg medical examiner's office, the deaths of an elderly brother and sister appear to be consistent with accidental carbon monoxide poisoning.

Edward Czechowski, 88, and his sister Irene, 86, were found in their home at 62 W. Byrsonima Loop by a family member around 1:30 p.m. on Monday after repeated telephone calls to the siblings went unanswered.

The pair was last seen on Sunday evening when they made a trip to the stores in their vehicle.

Citrus Co. honors Former Governor Kirk

Citrus County, FL -- In memory of Former Governor Claude R. Kirk's passing on Wednesday, Sept. 28, County Administrator Brad Thorpe has ordered the flags of the United States and the State of Florida to be flown at half-staff at all Citrus County Governmental Agencies today, Oct. 3 from sunrise to sunset.

Governor Kirk served as Florida’s Governor from 1967 to 1971.
