County gets PetMeals grant from Banfield Charitable Trust

Citrus County, FL -- Citrus County Community Services' PetMeals Program recently received a $1,750 grant from Banfield Charitable Trust to help provide pet food for the companion pets of homebound seniors.

Banfield's mission is to keep pets and families together. The trust, a non-profit offshoot of Banfield Pet Hospital, has been making it possible for pets to enjoy a better quality of life, the trust states, by giving back to communities and helping advance pet-related charities.

Citrus County's Home Delivered Meal Program provides a nutritious daily meal to seniors in Citrus County. Hunger can become a mutual problem for pets as well as their owners, especially when the owners are homebound.

County officials remove dogs from Floral City Humane Society facility

Citrus County Animal Control officers removed 31 dogs from the Humane Society of Florida facility in Floral City Thursday morning, March 24, and took them to the Citrus County Animal Shelter for treatment and quarantine.

Twenty-seven of the dogs had been brought to the Humane Society of Florida Adoption Center and Thrift Store on U.S. 41 by the former director who had told Citrus officials a few weeks ago after a run-in at the facility over a possible Parvo outbreak that she had resigned from the organization, even copying them her resignation letter.

Dog walking prohibited this weekend to accommodate Strawberry Festival

Floral City, Florida -- Though dog walking on trails in county parks has been approved, that practice will not be allowed at Floral Park during the annual two-day Strawberry Festival in Floral City this coming weekend.

County Parks and Recreation officials said Monday that dog walking in Floral Park will be temporarily suspended on both Saturday, March 5, and Sunday, March 6, because of the Strawberry Festival, which draws very large crowds to the park.

Homosassa hippo turns 51 years young

Homosassa, FL - The Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park will celebrate Lu the hippopotamus' 51st birthday at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 26 with a special birthday party open to the public. The park is located at 4150 South Suncoast Boulevard in Homosassa Springs.

The birthday boy will be presented with his own birthday cake specially prepared by the park's Wildlife Care Department. Park visitors, staff and students will sing "Happy Birthday" to the state of Florida's only honorary citizen hippo. Students can enjoy cupcakes and refreshments courtesy of park volunteers.
