McDonald's offers free FCAT breakfasts Monday morning

Tampa, Florida-- According to a recent release, more than 800 McDonald's restaurants in the state of Florida will provide a free breakfast to students on April 16, the first day of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT).

Students in grades three-11 can enjoy a complimentary Egg McMuffin, Apple Slices, and a low-fat milk or orange juice from any of the 188 McDonald's restaurants in the Tampa Bay area. 

Be sure to get there between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. to take advantage of this offer!

Santa visits Inverness elementary schools

Inverness, FL -- Santa and Mrs. Claus were welcomed in four elementary schools last week for "Santa's Mailbox".

The event, sponsored by the City of Inverness each year, provides a Santa Visit to children through second grade at Inverness area schools.

Earlier this month, students wrote letters to Santa explaining what they wanted for Christmas. Santa and Mrs. Claus visited with 1,320 students and provided them with a letter from Santa, small token gifts and read "The Night Before Christmas" to each class.

James Henningsen will become the next president of the College of Central Florida in Ocala, beginning in January.

Henningsen is currently the vice president for academic affairs/ chief academic officer at Seminole State College of Florida.

Former College of Central Florida president Charles Dassance retired in May.

Students knee deep in Garbage

Students knee deep in Garbage

Crystal River, FL -- Students at the Academy of Environmental Science in Crystal River got knee deep in garbage, all in the name of science.

On Wednesday, Oct. 26, the students teamed up with County and Waste Pro staff to go through bins of recycling. The students sorted through the recycling and figure out what people recycle most in Citrus County.

When the students are finished with their study they will submit reports and apply for grants for the school.

Inverness, FL -- Citrus High School will celebrate its 100th Anniversary during their Homecoming weekend Sept. 15 & 16.

The Citrus High School Homecoming theme for 2011 is “Golden Decades.” All CHS Alumni and their families are invited to view the Hurricane Homecoming Parade on Thursday, Sept. 15 at 5:30 p.m.

There will be two very special Grand Marshals, as well as former Hurricane Homecoming queens participating. The parade route will follow previous years, to include temporary closing of Highland Blvd. as well as neighboring streets.

Citrus County, FL -- The Citrus 20/20 Save Our Waters Week Committee is holding two contests for students during the first week of school.

The 2011 Save Our Waters Week Essay Contest is open to all Citrus County students in grades 6-12. The theme is, Going Green - Doesn't Mean Our Water!

Possible topics include, but are not limited to: water quality and food production, water quality and recreation, water quality and tourism, water quality and manatees, water quality and habitats, pollution, future water supplies, and the future outlook of our local water bodies.

Join the ASPIRE Program and help tutor students

Citrus County, FL -- The Nature Coast Volunteer Center, in partnership with Citrus County Schools, has developed a program designed to recruit and train volunteer tutors to work with elementary students.

The center is currently looking for volunteers interested in registering for upcoming ASPIRE Program training opportunities.

Registered volunteers will receive the required volunteer training and orientation provided by the Citrus County School District, as well as additional specialized training facilitated by a literacy expert who will teach tutors the skills necessary to assist children with reading fluency and comprehension skills.
