Citrus County deputy found dead

INVERNESS, Florida (AP) - The Citrus County Sheriff's Office says a judicial deputy was found dead during a well-being check after he didn't show up for work.

Officials said Tuesday that foul play isn't suspected in the death of 56-year-old Brian Hurn of Lecanto. Detectives are investigating the cause of death.

Hurn joined the sheriff's office in March 2010 following a 25-year career as a paramedic and rescue diver at the Chicago Fire Department.

Inverness, Florida -- Music at the Museum is taking place Thursday, October 17 a the Old Courthouse Heritage Museum. 

Leading off the series is Johnny Carlsson and Group with a Salute to Benny Goodman, the King of Swing. Jazz Concerts are $25 per person and include appetizers and a cash bar. Acoustic Concerts are $10 per person and include coffee and desserts.

Man to be executed for woman's Citrus Co. murder

STARKE, Florida (AP/WTSP) - A man convicted of killing a 21-year-old woman in the last miles of her long Memorial Day weekend drive across Florida in 1986 is set to face execution.

William Happ is scheduled to receive a lethal injection at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Florida State Prison for the death of Angie Crowley.

Crowley was slain shortly after moving to Florida from Illinois. She was driving from the Fort Lauderdale area to Yankeetown to visit a friend when she was abducted, beaten, raped and strangled.

Meth operation busted; said to be largest to date

Reports of a stolen car lead Citrus County deputies to discover what they're calling the largest meth operation the sheriff's office has seen to date.

According to officials, the operation involved, "a whopping 24 one-pot methamphetamine labs at a nearby double-wide mobile home in Lecanto."

Theodore Gene Benfield, 37, and Lesle Evon Benfield, 35, were arrested Friday for the massive meth operation. In addition to possession and manufacturing charges, the Benfields were charged for having at least three children under the age of 16 on the same property as the labs.

Floral City's third annual Bikes & BBQ Cook off

Floral City is hosting its third annual "Bikes and BBQ Event" Saturday, October 5, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.  

About a dozen BBQers will compete in the BBQ Contest, which is taking place at 7838 S. Great Oaks Drive in Floral City.  

There will be music groups playing throughout the event and vendors selling everything from crafts, to ice cream, to baked goods and even roasted corn. Shops in the area will also be doing special that day, including face painting, sidewalk sales and an art show. 

Ducks keeping neighbors up at night

Homosassa, Florida - Some neighbors in the small community of Homosassa have a big problem that's keeping them up at night. The Meadows subdivision is home to a little more than 50 Muscovy ducks.

While some people love the stocky birds with the red markings on their faces, others hate them. Those who dislike them say they're aggressive, spread disease and leave behind a large amount of droppings.
