"Par 4 Programs" golf tourney to benefit Citrus County youth programs

Citrus County, Florida-- The county Parks & Recreation Department presents the first annual “Par 4 Programs’ Fall Golf Tournament to benefit youth programs in the county.

It's taking place on Saturday, October 12 at Citrus Hills Golf & Country Club, with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.

Registration is now open for individuals or foursomes at a cost of $220, though individuals may also register for $55. The fee includes lunch provided by the Grille Restaurant, and access to the raffle and silent auction taking place at the event.

Happy Timez Tobacco robbery suspect at large

Inverness, Florida-- The search is still on for the camo-hat wearing suspect who robbed the Happy Timez Tobacco Shop Tuesday afternoon. 

According a Citrus County Sheriff's Office report, the clerk at the store rang the panic alarm sometime around 4:30 p.m. to alert law enforcement of the incident. 

As they arrived, the eager store clerk met them at the door with details of what happened- saying a camo-hat and cowboy boot-wearing man had just barged in, said he had a gun and demanded merchandise and cash.

Citrus County, Florida-- In the days before a hurricane hits, the lines at grocery stores often seem to wrap around the building as shoppers stock up on day-to-day essentials like water, ice and batteries. But for people with special needs, planning for a storm should start weeks — or even months — in advance of a hurricane.

With hurricane season ramping up, the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind all of our citizens to register with Emergency Management’s special needs program as soon as possible.

Citrus County Florida-- Citrus County Animal Services is hosting the Third Annual Dog Days of Dunnellon event on Saturday, August 17, 2013. 

There will be contests for the ugliest, cutest, smallest and biggest dogs, as well as contests for the best dog trick and the best singing dog. 

Horse starved in Citrus Co; animal lovers appalled

Floral City, Florida - "I cried her name, I said, 'Mary, Mary -- how could they do this to you?'" says a sobbing Cheryl Pence. 

She's talking about Mary, an Arabian mare she used to own. She saw Mary again Thursday afternoon, right before she died.

When animal control officers arrived at the horse's current home near Floral City, Mary was down on the ground, too weak to stand -- simply a breathing carcass.

"Deplorable, emaciated, there's really not a term for it -- it's beyond emaciation," says Animal Control Officer Terry Funderburk of the horse's condition.

Emaciated horse euthanized, Citrus woman arrested

Floral City, Florida -- Deputies in Citrus County say they have arrested a woman in a case of extreme animal neglect.

The Citrus County Sheriff's Office says 43-year-old Tammi Walsh Kampman's Arabian horse had been steadily losing weight over the course of a year, to the point where its bones could clearly be seen. A deputy called out to Kampman's home noted the horse also had unkempt hooves that had not been trimmed or cared for in a long time.

A veterinarian was called to the scene to euthanize the malnourished animal.

P.L.A.Y Youth Sports

P.L.A.Y Youth Sports

Crystal River, Florida -- The next season of P.L.A.Y. sports will begin on August 12, 2013 and registration is now open. 

P.L.A.Y. programs are designed for children ages 3 to 5 who aren't quite ready for the organized sports league. 

It takes place Monday through Friday at Citrus County Parks and Recreation in Lecanto at 2804 W. Marc Knighton Court.
