Making a Difference: Citrus commander's challenge

Inverness, Florida  - Commander Buddy Grant with the Citrus County Sheriff's Office is challenging his deputies to beat his time of 4:28 on the Sheriffs office PT (Physical Training) course.

As a United Way board member, he says it's something that's been on his mind for a long time. This challenge is a way to give back and make a difference in his community.

12th annual Citrus Summer Showdown 5K the Saturday

Inverness, Florida -- One of the best off-road races is happening this weekend in Inverness.

The Citrus Summer Showdown 5K starts at 8:00 a.m. at the Whispering Pines Park Picnic Pavilion, 1700 Forest Drive, Inverness. The race is mostly on nature trails.

Pre-registration is free but day of registration is $5.

Tampa Bay Rays baseball trip

Citrus County's Home Delivered Meals Program and the Senior Foundation of Citrus County are scheduling trips to the Tampa Bay Rays Baseball game on Wednesday, July 10.

Tickets are $45 each and include round-trip chartered bus transportation from the Citrus County Resource Center to Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg and admission/seating at the game.

Citrus County, Florida-- An audience looked on as a dozen deputies from the Citrus County Sherriff’s Office braved the heat and went head to head with Commander Buddy Grant during the first ever Commander’s Challenge Tuesday morning.

Inverness, Florida -- Cars and trucks from all decades will assemble in the plaza of the Inverness Government Center on Friday, July 19. 

There will be classics, antique and sports, imports and more. There will also be music, valve cover car racing, 50/50 prizes and lots more fun.

There is no cost to enter.

The event will be held at Inverness Government Center plaza at 212 West Main Street from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Swimming lessons for the whole family

Swimming lessons for the whole family

Inverness, Florida -- Whispering Pines Park is offering the whole family swim lessons for the summer!

They have swim lessons from 6 months old to adult. There are three morning sessions available starting June 3, June 17 and July 8th. Evening sessions begin June 4 and July 9th.

The cost for the eight class swim session is only $35!

All classes follow the American Red Cross curriculum and all of the instructors are certified Water Safety Instructors.

Scallop season boosting Homosassa business

Homosassa, Florida -- There's a traffic jam at the Homosassa boat ramp with mariners eager to scrounge for scallops.

Rained out three years ago, Joe Turconi, of Safety Harbor, is gearing up to give it another shot.

"I'm back, ready for some action. I'm a rookie, but I'm going to give it my all," he said while launching his boat.
