Freeze Warning for tonight

The National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Warning for Citrus, Levy, Sumter, and Hernando counties for late tonight through early Monday morning.

A cold dry air mass associated with the high pressure system making its way down from the north will bring additional freezing temperatures to the nature coast from midnight until 8 a.m. Monday.

Temperatures are expected to drop to between 28 and 32 degrees lasting 3 to 5 hours in the normally colder locations. <--break->

Some patchy frost is also possible.

Residents should bring in or cover cold sensitive plants and bring pets indoors tonight.

Angler reels in record yellow bullhead catfish

Homosassa, Florida -- An angler fishing with minnows at a boat ramp hooked the largest yellow bullhead on record in Florida, the state said today.

Tom Flynn of Homosassa reeled in the catfish weighing 5 pounds, .75-ounces on Dec. 17th while fishing in the Crystal River.  It was 20 inches long.

The previous record was a 2.91-pounder caught by Michael Price in the Withlacoochee River in Levy County in March of 2007.

A freshwater fish biologist with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission in Ocala verified the record catch.

"Actually, I was fishing for mangrove snapper," Flynn said. "However, I started catching catfish and decided to keep them. I caught seven and took them home."

Flynn said he tried to assure his wife they were good eating.

FWS public meeting on Three Sister Springs crowding

Lecanto, FL -- The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service staff wants to know what you think should be done about overcrowding at Three Sister Springs.

A public meeting on Jan. 4 will give citizens the opportunity to present ideas and management plans for the springs. It will be the first step in figuring out how to deal with boat and human traffic during the winter months when manatees are seeking refuge.

According to the Citrus Chronicle, the FWS is trying to limit the number of kayakers and snorkelers using the springs at one time and is considering regulations to control it.

The meeting will take place on Jan. 4 at the College of Central Florida Citrus Conference Center in Lecanto from 6 to 9 p.m.

Freeze Warnings for the Bay area tonight

Freeze Warnings for the Bay area tonight

The National Weather Service has issued a Hard Freeze Warning for our entire viewing area, except for Pinellas County, from late tonight through Tuesday morning.  Pinellas County will not be as cold, but temperatures there will approach the freezing level as well, so a Freeze Warning is in effect.

Temperatures in Pinellas County are expected to drop to near 35 at the beach and 30 north of Safety Harbor.  All other counties will likely see temperatures in the 27-31 degree range, except northern Pasco, Hernando and Citrus counties where temperatures will run a little cooler ranging from 19-26 degrees.

A Hard Freeze Warning means temperatures are expected to fall below the freezing mark for several hours possibly killing unprotected crops and cold sensitive vegetation.  Area residents should take precautions to protect their sensitive plants.  Remember your pets and check on those without adequate heating systems.
